The province of Holguin is a national leader in the use of wind energy, with the two largest wind farms of their kind in Cuba, located in the coastal municipality of Gibara, according to a publication of the newspaper Trabajadores.
Commissioned in 2008 and 2010, respectively, the Gibara 1 and 2 Wind Farms have a combined installed capacity of 9.6 megawatts, which accumulate a historic contribution to the National Electroenergy System (SEN) of more than 100 Gigawatts, while so far this year they have served more than two thousand 565 mw/h, the information adds.
The geographic conditions of the northern coast of Holguin allow to take better advantage of the wind, so there are plans to build other wind farms such as Gibara 3, Banes, Río Seco 2 and Río Seco 1, and Jagüeyes, said César Sarmiento Ávila, director of Investment of Electricity Company in Holguín.
As for solar energy, the territory is not left behind. Just a few weeks ago, the Miramar photovoltaic farm was put into operation, with a capacity of 4,000 MW, located in the area of Yuraguanal, in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, which together generate 4.4 MW.
Another wind farm is also under construction in the area, which should be completed next year.
According to Sarmiento Ávila, it is important to note that Holguín has identified and prepared 27 areas in all of its municipalities where small photovoltaic farms can be installed in the future.
The Investment Director also pointed out that in order to expand the use of solar energy, there are five areas that have been identified and prepared for the installation of small photovoltaic farms.
The first stage includes the construction of a 21.8 MW photovoltaic park in Corúa 5 – Mayarí municipality; and another one, of the same generating capacity in Pilón, in the municipality of Antilla, which are expected to be synchronized to the SEN in the last quarter of this year.
And in a second stage, three other photovoltaic farms will be prepared, one in Moa and another one in Potrerillo, in “Rafael Freyre”, and a third one in the community of Providencia – near Frank País International Airport.
In addition to the large generation projects, Holguin has launched initiatives to bring renewable energy to isolated communities that are not connected to the SEN, especially those located in far away or hard-to-reach areas.
According to the also MSc. Fernando Hechavarría Pupo, director of the UEB Renewable Energy Sources in Holguin, the province has about 1,420 houses that are electrified through isolated solar panels, several of which have broken batteries, but it is expected that in a few weeks the country will have similar systems to replace these elements.
He argued that there are a number of collaboration projects that include one kilowatt (kW) and two kW off-grid solar systems, which will benefit a number of families, such as the FRE Local at the University of Sancti Spíritus and the Former
Spíritus and the Former Project, which, through a donation from Canada will allow the installation of solar systems in 502 homes.
