Beaches are rehabilitated with maintenance actions in Holguín

The recovery of more than seven kilometers of beaches through rehabilitation and maintenance actions, stands out among the achievements of Holguin province in the implementation of the Tarea Vida, the Cuban State’s plan to confront Climate Change.

Martha María Mousso, a senior specialist in the sector, explained to the Cuban News Agency that the improvements include 10 tourist resorts in the territory, one of the priorities of the conservation programs.

She pointed out that Guardalavaca, one of the sun and beach destinations in the country’s Eastern region, stands out, recovered by sand dumping after the damages caused by the impact of heavy rains.

She stressed that monitoring work continues in these prioritized ecosystems, which include the area of exposure to the sun, the state of the dunes and the preservation of endemic flora and fauna populations and a source of consultation for land-use plans.

The application of agroecological techniques is also generalized in more than 29 hectares, where about 69 varieties of viands, grains, vegetables, pastures and forages with genotypic and agronomic characteristics resilient to the effects of climate change are cultivated.

In the eastern territory, the third most densely populated in Cuba, more than 446 hectares were benefited in 2023 with electric central pivot irrigation systems, which allow a better use of water.

Tarea Vida has been implemented for the past five years in 76 coastal municipalities of the largest Antillean Island and its objectives include reducing the negative impact of saline instruction, intense drought, coastal flooding and other phenomena associated with global warming, reducing vulnerabilities on the beaches.
