The community project “Let’s take care of our environment” is one of the efforts carried out in the province of Holguin, with the aim of improving the quality of life in vulnerable neighborhoods through environmental actions and the active participation of its residents.
Raisa Hernández Tabera, community leader and creator of the program, stressed to ACN that the strategy consists of contributing to the solution of local problems such as micro-dumps, contamination of rivers and streams, among others, using the existing potentialities in the settlements.
She emphasized that this project, which began in 2021, is already being applied in the districts El Llano and Cayo de Mayabe, where environmental education activities are also being carried out with adolescents and young people in conjunction with primary and secondary schools.
Among the main actions carried out are contests for children’s participation, recovery of raw materials, collection of solid waste and the creation of groups of interest with the children of the community.
The contributions of this program include the identification of activists who have an impact on the promotion of culture, access to employment and beautification works, based on the particularities and preferences of each neighborhood, she said.
Also in these places, priority is given to the repair of medical offices, warehouses, connection to aqueduct and sewage systems and urbanization measures aimed at improving living conditions and infrastructure.
Holguín has 45 neighborhoods classified as vulnerable, distributed in the 14 municipalities where construction, promotion and professional training work, delivery of inputs are carried out with the participation of the Health, Culture, Education and Hydraulic Resources sectors, based on the priorities established by government authorities.
