Low infant mortality indicators and high life expectancy are among the results in Holguin of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, founded by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, four decades ago.
This program, which began on January 4, 1984 at the Lawton polyclinic in Havana, and later extended to all provinces, has among its objectives guiding the patient in his or her transit through the different levels of care and to bring specialties closer to the community.
Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, general director of the sector in the territory, said that this strategy helps to improve health indicators and the rehabilitation of the psychosocial and hygienic-sanitary factors of the population, especially in vulnerable neighborhoods.
He emphasized the intersectoral nature of the care provided, which places Cuba among the most advanced countries in the world, and the consecration, altruism and commitment of these professionals, whose goal is to solve more than 70 percent of the population’s disease problems.
Verdecia Reyes considered as an essential parameter the knowledge and skills acquired during training, endorsed by the certification of more than 974 teaching clinics, 73 basic groups inserted into this in this process, and the categorization of more than 400 doctors and nurses.
Luis Ernesto Vázquez Almaguer, a young doctor at René Ávila polyclinic, said that the prevention of risk factors and the promotion of of sound lifestyles are the strategy of this project, made up of more than 1,000 health teams in the province, with an infant mortality rate in 2023 of 4.5 percent per a thousand live births, lower than the country’s average (7.1).
This program is also important in the monitoring and follow-up of pregnant women, infants, people with disabilities, and the timely detection of chronic conditions.
During the commemoration, held at Celia Sanchez theater of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), 17 polyclinics and 42 basic health teams, as well as outstanding professionals in the field were recognized.
The event was attended by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the PCC’s Central Committee and first of the Central Committee of the PCC and first secretary of the province; Manuel Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín, among other local authorities.
