The Eastern Zone wakes up today with five contenders separated by just one game in the 65th National Baseball Series. While Pinar del Rio looks to defend its comfortable lead in the West.
Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba share the top spot in the East with 11 wins and seven losses. But close on their heels are Granma, Holguin, and Sancti Spiritus. A trio ready to seize upon any slip-up by their rivals to climb to the top.
With such a tight race, the lead is as fragile as a narrow advantage in the ninth inning. A single day of play could topple the current leaders, create a multi-way tie at the top, and completely reshape the standings.
The Lumberjacks arrive with momentum following yesterday’s 12–2 victory over Camagüey at Julio Antonio Mella Stadium. Also where they racked up 13 hits in a game shortened to six innings due to rain.
Yordanys Alarcón spearheaded the attack with a home run and three RBIs contributions. That helped the green-and-red squad reclaim a share of the lead and reaffirmed their standing in a battle that offers no room for rest.
Meanwhile, Santiago de Cuba held onto its position among the leaders after splitting a doubleheader with Granma. Winning the second game 6–3 after falling 13–8 in the first. In the victory, the Wasps found a spark in a home run by Yoel Yanqui.
During this clash, Yoelquis Guibert hit his 11th home run of the season, solidifying his place as the league leader in that category. Also though his power wasn’t enough to prevent Santiago de Cuba’s loss in the opening game.
Holguin and Sancti Spiritus also bolstered their aspirations with shutout victories, the Cubs winning 7-0 against Guantanamo, and the Roosters defeating Ciego de Avila 1-0—results that leave them, alongside Granma, with a 10-8 record.
While the eastern region resembles a rope pulled taut by five different hands, Pinar del Rio sets the pace in the west with 14 wins and four losses. Holding a three-game lead over Matanzas and standing alone at the top of the standings.
The Tobacco Growers strengthened their position by defeating Artemisa 5-2 at the Capitán San Luis stadium. Bolstered by a home run from Tailon Sánchez and six innings of scoreless pitching (in terms of earned runs) from Frank Denis Blanco.
Matanzas, currently second at 11-7, will look to regain ground after a 15-7 loss to Villa Clara. While Industriales arrive with momentum following two victories over La Isla. One of which was decided by a three-run home run from Yasmani Tomás in the tenth inning.
The Lions hold third place in the west with a 9-7 record, ahead of Mayabeque (8-8). Also who flexed their muscles by routing Cienfuegos 15-2, securing their spot among the top four.
Moreover the upcoming slate of games features two distinct storylines: the Tobacco Growers determined to extend their dominance. And a competitive race in the east where no team can afford to get too comfortable on the throne without hearing the footsteps of those in pursuit.
