Holguin hosted the “Creative Rural Woman” gathering at the Provincial Agriculture Delegation. The event took place against the backdrop of transformations proposed in the new Law on Agricultural and Forestry Land and the urgent need to advance toward food sovereignty.

Women representing the province’s agricultural sector—alongside government officials, political organizations, and representatives from the Federation of Cuban Women. Met to discuss the current role of women in Cuba’s rural areas.

A lecture delivered by Dr. Maribexy Calcerrada Gutiérrez, a Full Professor at the University of Holguin. Aimed to foster dialogue and reflection regarding the main challenges faced by women involved in agricultural activities.

The discussion served as a forum for exchanging experiences. Identifying obstacles, and sharing proposals to help strengthen rural women’s participation in agricultural development projects.

Furthermore, the initiative called for recognizing the role of these women not only as producers. But also as active participants in the transformation and sustainability of agrifood systems.

Yusmila Rodríguez Cruz, the Agriculture Delegate for Holguin province, stated that when the time comes, every woman in the sector will be positioned where she is most useful. Ensuring that new processes are carried out optimally and effectively.

In Cuba, women play a role at various stages of agricultural activity, and their participation is vital for rural families and communities.

In December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 15th as the International Day of Rural Women. The UN also declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer.
