Holguin Graduates First Mid-Level Anesthesia Technicians

After two years of academic training, the first 23 mid-level anesthesia technicians recently graduated in the province of Holguin. The graduation ceremony, which also coincided with the graduation of 19 nursing professionals. It was held at the theater of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital.

During the ceremony, Dr. Rosell Dorrego Anzardo, director of the Comandante Arides Estévez Sánchez Medical Sciences Branch. He spoke about the impact this new workforce will have on the anesthesia and surgical services in the region. Their training was a response to a special call for applications issued in 2024 by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). In response to the need to increase human resources in this area within hospitals dedicated to the specialized care of critically ill patients.

Also during the ceremony, professionals in both study modalities were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements. The 42 recent graduates are expected to join the most underserved healthcare institutions soon.

With the presence of Dr. George Augusto Velázquez Zúñiga, Rector of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo). The ceremony was dedicated to the centennial of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

Among the main requirements for this Intermediate Technician in Anesthesia program are being between 18 and 35 years of age. Holding a high school diploma, a technical degree, or equivalent qualifications (provided they are at the upper secondary level). Not having any allergies to medications, and being physically and mentally fit.

This training is full-time and linked to hospitals in the region. Holguin boasts a qualified and highly trained faculty.

The Holguin branch is responsible for training professionals from the provincial capital and the municipalities of Gibara, Rafael Freyre, Baguanos, Calixto García, Cacocum, and Urbano Noris. The Moa branch serves students from the municipalities of Frank País and Sagua de Tanamo. Banes serves students from the municipality of Antilla, and Mayari serves students from Cueto.
