Cuban Electric Union Updates on SEN Restoration

Microsystems have been established in each of the country’s provinces to guarantee vital services. The Cuban Electric Union (UNE) reported today in an update on the restoration of the National Electric System (SEN). Following its latest total outage this Friday at 4:30 p.m. due to a fault in the 220-kilovolt line between Santa Clara and Sancti Spiritus.

The Diez de Octubre (October 10th) Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), in the Camagüey municipality of Nuevitas. It has unit six in the process of starting up. After completing repairs to the regenerative air heaters, and its reintegration will contribute to strengthening the SEN.

According to the National Union of Electricity Workers (UNE), the priority is to bring back online the Energas Boca de Jaruco units. To begin the startup process for the Máximo Gómez, Ernesto Guevara De La Serna, Antonio Guiteras, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and Diez de Octubre thermoelectric power plants.

The publication adds that once power is restored to the eastern part of the country. The Lidio Ramón Pérez Felton and Antonio Maceo thermoelectric power plants will be brought online. The total disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) occurs within a context of high complexity for the Cuban power sector.

In recent years, the country has faced several events of similar magnitude. Including the collapse of the SEN on October 18th, 2024. Following a breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric power plant. An incident that required several days for the gradual restoration of service.

Subsequently, further nationwide blackouts occurred in November and December 2024. As well as other nationwide events during 2025 and 2026. Associated with failures in generating units, capacity deficits, and fuel supply limitations.

The process of restoring the National Electric System after a total blackout requires the creation of electrical microsystems from units with autonomous start-up capabilities. Which are gradually synchronized until the interconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) is achieved.
