The Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill (Gihilan), located in the coastal city of Gibara. It is one of the industries in Holguin province that boasts commendable experience in utilizing waste generated by its manufacturing processes.
Adolfo Sarmiento Ramos, the factory’s Investment Specialist, told CNA that the company has received several awards. For its contribution to the circular economy, based on the reuse of waste from all the inputs it processes.
He explained that the spinning lines collect waste in storage chambers. These unusable materials are mixed with the fibers obtained by grinding textile scraps. Generated in the garment workshop and transformed into the fibers used to make floor mats. Which are then sewn together, creating a new, high-demand product.
Likewise, the threads rejected according to the quality standards that distinguish this factory are used in the production of twine. Primarily sold to the meat industry for tying sausages. Although they can also be used as wicks in candle making and for various purposes in healthcare institutions.
The specialist commented that these non-conforming threads are also braided. Into ropes on a machine born from the ingenuity of the entity’s innovators. These ropes are then used to hand-weave hammocks, another novel product. For which they manufacture the metal terminals and wooden accessories that complete their unique design.

Sarmiento mentioned another recovered waste product: the tow collected at the end of each work shift during machine sanitization. This tow is used for cleaning machinery and tools. In companies dedicated to nickel extraction and sugar production.
Furthermore he added that the manufacturing of plastic containers using virgin raw materials generates injection molding waste. Also which is removed, ground up along with other recycled materials. And reused in the production of cones and tubes used to wind the yarn. Guaranteeing a basic supply for the company’s daily operations.
Located in Holguin, also known as the White City of Crabs. The Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill, belonging to the Ministry of Industry. It exemplifies sustainability and resource utilization. It is approaching its 65th anniversary, having been founded by the Cuban-Argentine guerrilla fighter Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
