Codanza was born from the desire to make Holguin a stage for national dance. Today, on International Dance Day, that commitment is celebrated as the living history of a city narrated through its choreography.
Founded more than three decades ago, the company has toured Latin America, Spain, and Germany. A championing contemporary dance with its own unique concept and staging high-level choreography.
Its pieces are performed by young graduates of the Art Schools. Over the years, have grown in their development and integrated their work into Holguin’s cultural landscape.
For Vianki González Miranda, choreographer, teacher, and director of the group. This is the greatest legacy of a project she has been involved with since its founding. After three decades, it remains a national benchmark for evolving toward a refined style. And despite the challenges, continues to showcase talent on stage.
Codanza possesses a common thread that distinguishes it from other groups through its unique style of dance. This group celebrates 33 years of continuous work, during which it has danced the history of the city, González Miranda told CNA.
Although it has faced challenges such as the emigration of trained dancers. Codanza never considered it impossible to return to the theaters and start anew with young graduates from vocational schools. Likewise, Codanza has been present at every significant moment in Holguin’s history, narrated through its dances during the Romerías de Mayo (May Pilgrimages). The Gibara International Festival of Low-Budget Cinema, the Ibero-American Culture Festival. And each stage has become another chapter in the story told through dance.
