Gibara Dam Stores Water Levels for an Entire Year

The Gibara Dam, classified as the main and crucial hydraulic support for the city of Holguin, has undergone a radical transformation after the recent hurricane. Going from a critical drought situation to having a reserve that guarantees the water supply for an entire year.

This was reported by Juan Mario Hechavarría Hernández, delegate of Hydraulic Resources in the province. He explained that, less than 15 days ago, his brigades and those from Santiago de Cuba were working against the clock. On an emergency extraction barge to obtain every last drop of water possible. “Holguin was literally running out of water,” the official emphasized.

Moreover the situation began to change with the passage of Hurricane Melissa through the province of Holguin. “In that single night, this reservoir received more than 10 million cubic meters,” Hechavarría explained.

Also the inflow continued in the following days from runoff from its tributaries. Including the Gibara River, which has allowed the dam to currently store approximately 37 million cubic meters of water, with the level continuing to rise.
