Gibara Film Festival gives out collateral awards      

The XVIII Gibara International Film Festival, held in the also nicknamed Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos in Holguin province, granted its collateral awards this Saturday, and chose the work that will receive the sponsorship of the Factoría del Cine Pobre (Low Budget Film Factory).

The jury of the Cuban Association of the Cinematographic Press awarded the work Los océanos son los verdaderos continentes (The Oceans Are the True Continents (Cuba-Italy, 2023), by Tomasso Santambrogio, as best fiction feature film; while El Bohemio (The Bohemian, 2023), by Petr Václav (Czech Republic); Accattaroma, Slovakia, and Italisan Daniele Costantini, received a special mention.

Jíbaro (Cuba, 2023) by Osmanys Sánchez; and Los finales de los domingos (2022) by Brazilin Olavo Junior, were distinguished by the National Film

Federación Nacional de Cineclubes (National Federation of Film Clubs) with an award and a mention, respectively.

In the Young Jury, the award for best fiction feature film was won by Doble o nada (Double or Nothing) from Morocco, 2023, produced by Rachida Saadi; while Cómo matar a una muñeca (How to Kill a Doll from Brazil, 2022), by Alek Lean, got the award for Best Fiction Short Film.

In the best feature and short best feature categories, Una mirada honesta (An Honest Look (Argentina-Colombia, 2022), by Roberto Persano and Santiago Nacif; and Madulu, the Seafarer (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines-United States, 2022), by Akley Olton, were crowned as best feature and short best feature documentary.

At Plaza Colón Hotel, it was also announced the work that will be sponsored by the Factoría del Cine Pobre, focused on supporting audiovisual production in the east of the country and Camagüey; here was selected the documentary project Llave de paso, by Osmanys Sánchez (Santiago de Cuba).

The work Llave de paso tells the story of a community and five characters who react to adversities of drought and Climate Change from the loss of empathy.

In the director’s opinion, the work would approximate the conflict of the precarious access to water for a population.
