Filmmakers from Santiago de Cuba in Gibara

Representatives of the best of the seventh art from Santiago de Cuba took active participation in 2024 Gibara International Film Festival (FICGibara), which closed this August 10th.

Filmmaker Osmanys Sanchez referred to his participation in the competition with the 21-minute short documentary “Jíbaro”, which addresses non-discrimination and non-violence towards LGBTQ+ people.

He pointed out that in the Factoría de Cine Pobre he also bet on the short film “Llave de paso”, which narrates the incipient struggle for water in the communities of the Sierra Maestra mountains and with “Vamos a jugar” he competed in the category of films in production.

He considered the event as vital for its intention to empower and help filmmakers from the east of the country and Camagüey, and to enable dialogue between counterparts, with the aim of knowing the diversity of views and current lines of work of the audiovisual language to tell stories in a different way.

He expressed his gratitude to the organizing committee for the concretion of the Festival and its work team, makers of a quality final product.

Filmmaker Yasmani Castro, who competed with his first feature-length documentary “Gente de Color”, a stupid definition” in projects under construction and in the Factoría de Cine Pobre with “Un violín para Oshún”, pointed out the relevance of the event as a platform where all art forms converge.

He highlighted the participation in the event of young creators, responsible for continuing with the construction of images necessary to save and make visible the reality and history of the nation, as it becomes a space, in order to create alliances, with the purpose of developing future projects.

FICGibara, founded as the International Low Budget Film Festival by Humberto Solás in 2003, contributes to the promotion of international cinema and to place this town in the province of Holguín in the country’s cultural stage and the world.
