The 18th edition of Gibara International Film Festival (FICGibara), which will run until Saturday, August 10, in that coastal city of Holguin province, will be inaugurated tonight with the presentation of the Lucia de Honor Award to director Manuel Herrera.
The event, with the widest competition in terms of number of films in recent years, will feature 83 films from 25 nations, including fiction films, feature documentaries, short films and animated films, as well as special presentations, such as the restored copy of the film The Death of a Bureaucrat, by Tomas Gutierrez Alea.
According to the Festival’s official website, one of the most significant news of this edition is the return of the Films in Progress section, which provides funding for several films in post-production.
It will also highlight the focus on consumption and production for Eastern Cuba and Camagüey, with the creation of the Factoría del Cine Pobre, a face-to-face event to discuss portfolios of audiovisual projects in development.
Theoretical panels will address topics including film heritage, Cuban graphics, the experiences of creators from the east of the country and the collaboration between Cuba and Switzerland in this area, based on the conceptual axis “Filma el Oriente” (Film the East).
After the usual opening parade, starring the people of the town known as Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos, along with participants and guests, will be held the gala where the Canadian film “Sin papeles”, by director Christian de la Cortina, will be premiered.
Among the musical highlights will be concerts by the Original de Manzanillo, Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco and the usual performances by local artists such as Manuel Leandro, Norberto Leyva and Fernando Cabreja.
The visual arts will have their space with the inauguration of the exhibition “El ruido, el silencio” by artist Cristhian Escalona and the Rapé project with the exhibition ” Auténtico arte cubano”.
The Gibara International Film Festival managed to materialize, since 2003, the culmination of films in various stages, which bet on the independent and alternative in the face of the hegemonic monopoly of the film industry.
For two decades, it has brought to that city, among participants and guests, world-famous actors such as Imanol Arias, Benicio del Toro and Victoria Abril and artists of the prestige of Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés and Fito Páez.
