New nursing protocol from Holguin generalized in Cuba

The generalization of the protocol devised in Holguin for the care of newborns with esophageal atresia in western Cuba is one of the results of this northeastern province, as part of the application of science and technological innovation in health.

Eiliana Cruz Gonzalez, author of the research, pointed out to the Cuban News Agency that this study is put into practice in the neonatal surgery services and contributes to the survival of these high-risk infants, who undergo surgery in the first hours of life.

She specified that since 2023, the new procedure has also been applied in the eastern and central provinces, as a result of the regionalization of this service, one of the priorities of the Maternal and Infant Care Program in Cuba.

The scientific contribution, the only one of its kind in the country, includes the transfer time by ambulance for cases residing outside Holguin, as well as access to qualified personnel in charge of providing psychological support to the patients’ families.

The specialist said that the main guidelines for the postoperative period are included, where nurses play a fundamental role in the patients’ recovery, especially in the administration of treatments.

Cruz González, who is also head of nursing at Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Children’s Hospital, explained that the protocolization extends to the specialties of Oncology and Orthopedics, where the preparation of human resources is guaranteed.

As part of the scientific research in this health care center, alternative treatments in Natural and Traditional Medicine are also used, with the aim of improving the quality of life of patients who have undergone surgery and those with chronic pathologies such as bronchial asthma.

The Children’s Hospital in Holguín is developing a broad program of science and technological innovation that includes Natural and Traditional Medicine, oncology and rehabilitation services, among others, and also contributes to mitigate the negative effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

Esophageal atresia is a birth defect of the esophagus (swallowing tube) that connects the mouth with the stomach and in babies who present this condition, this organ has two separate sections, for which an operation is necessary for the correction of the anomaly.
