Early education center for children's attention in Holguin

Early childhood education centers in Holguín outskirts

The new children’s day care center Nené Traviesa and Amiguitos de Calixto, inaugurated after 35 years without opening one in the head municipality of Holguín, benefit families from far away communities with early childhood educational attention.

Both institutions opened their doors for the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, and are located on the outskirts of the city, in two educational complexes, at IPVCE José Martí senior high school and “Calixto García” tenichal school, on the road to Mayarí and the Central Highway via Habana, respectively.

Yaima Cruz de la Cruz, head of Early Childhood at the General Directorate of Education of the territory, explained to ACN that the institutions have more than 50 professionals, including educators and assistants, and have a capacity of 245 children each, with the necessary conditions to accommodate them from the second to the sixth year of life.

Their construction has made it possible to meet the demand for places by families living in remote areas such as Las Biajacas, San Rafael and the Edecio Pérez, who now have a place where their children can be taught and cared for closer to home, she said.

The official said that these centers also provide employment opportunities for people from these communities, an example of which is the “Amiguitos de Calixto” where part of the staff of assistants is made up of neighbors who were trained and certified to perform that function.

At present, the province has 65 children’s circles with an enrollment of more than 9,000 students, and work is underway to build two more in the municipalities of Mayarí and Antilla, in addition to the creation of alternatives such as children’s houses, of which there are 18 in the territory so far.

On April 10, 1961, the first institutions of this type were inaugurated in the country, promoted by the heroine Vilma Espín and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, with the aim of helping working mothers, satisfying the basic needs of children and providing them with an integral education from an early age to prepare them for life.
