Neonatology services in Holguin boost work by nurses

Since February 19 and until February 24, the Open Doors days are taking place in the Neonatology services in those health institutions of Holguin province where newborns are received and admitted.

In that case there are the Neonatology services of the General University Hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the largest maternity hospital in the country; those of the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, with the Regional Center of Neonatal Surgery where newborns from all the Eastern Cuba and Camagüey are taken in; those of the Maternal and Child Hospital Dr. Luis Cruz Cruz Cruz, in Banes; of Mártires de Mayarí, belonging to the municipality of the same name and those of the Hospital Guillermo Luis, in Moa.

One of the main purposes of these conferences is to inform nursing students in the different study modalities about the altruistic and humane work performed by neonatal nurses, which ranges from the birth in the delivery room, the joint accommodation in the neonatal intensive care or in the Regional Center for Neonatal Surgery, to the healthy and happy arrival of the newborns to the bosom of the family.

According to MSc. Isahara Denis Rojas, who works as an official of the Provincial Nursing Section, “this activity is organized together with the Provincial Neonatology Group, which has a long and fruitful history backed by the expertise acquired with the multiple daily births of children, to whom care must be provided”.

The conference also includes the participation of students from the “Alberto Sosa” and “Jesús Menéndez” Pre-University Institutes in the city of Holguín, in coordination with the Provincial Education Directorate.

Now that the province has a deficit of nursing professionals, it is essential to encourage actions that promote such altruistic work, its role in the application of the main models of action and protocols of the service, as well as the mechanisms used for the transfer of neonates and the role of the nurse as the main caregiver of these patients.

For such reason it was decided to show the work of these professionals with a fundamental role in the direct care of the newborn, who among their functions include the monitoring of vital signs, administration of medications, feeding by special routes, emotional and educational support to the families of neonates and the prevention of complications through constant observation of health status, early detection of possible problems and the implementation of preventive measures.
