Leuris Pupo finishes seventh in the World Cup of Sport Shooting

Leuris Pupo Requejo from Holguin province stood seventh after today’s second round of the 25-meter rapid fire pistol, and could not make it to the final of the specialty at the World Cup of Sport Shooting in Cairo 2024, in Egypt.

Holguin native athlete scored rounds of 97, 98 and 94 points, totaling 289, which added to the 293 of the first elimination round left him with 582 units, just one point away from being among the six who will fight for the title.

The qualifying stage was dominated by German Florian Peter (588), followed by Korean Jong-Ho Song (585) and Kazak Nikita Chiryukin (584).

Completing the six finalists, all with 583 points, were Maksym Horodynets (Ukraine), Jaekyoon Lee (South Korea) and Massimo Spinella (Italy).

This competition marked the beginning of the international preparation of Leuris Pupo, the only Cuban shooter qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

It will be the seventh summer event for the veteran shooter, who will seek his third medal under the five rings in the French city, after the title won in London 2012 and the silver medal in Tokyo 2020.

According to Ecured, by winning the gold medal in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol specialty at the London 2012 Olympics, setting an Olympic record and equaling the world record, he became the Cuban shooter with the best results in the history of that sport.

The silver medalist at Tokyo 2020 Olympics has participated in six Olympic Games and in many international competitions.
