Leuris Pupo will attend his seventh Olympic Games this year; It is said to be easy, but it is not, especially because he will not compete as a “filler”, but among the serious contenders for the awards podium in the 25 meter rapid fire pistol, with which he would achieve his third Olympic medal.
After becoming Cuba’s first qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, last year he gave us a beautiful title in the Pan American Games organized in the capital of Chile.
The message? He continues to be a star and has the aim required to shine in the City of the Lights, as he did in the London 2012 (gold) and Tokyo 2020 (silver) editions.
In tune with his range, the sports shooting authorities in Cuba have designed a preparatory route that seems appropriate for the purposes of the Holguin native and his coach Meinardo Torres.
As planned, he competes in the world cup in Cairo, Egypt, scheduled for January 24 to February 1.
In the second month of the year he will complete a preparation base in Luca, Italy, and in March another between Argentina and El Salvador, prior to the Olympic qualification tournament scheduled in Buenos Aires in the first days of April.
Pupo’s path to his third Olympic medal includes attending two more World Cups this season, Baku in May and Munich in June.
The prelude to entering the Olympic village in Paris will take place in Spain or on French soil, in order to iron out the final details.
Meinardo will accompany Leuris Pupo as always on that journey and feels full confidence in the mastery and competitiveness of his most distinguished student.
All calculations indicate that to enter the final under the five rings a score of at least 584 points must be completed. Pupo has achieved it several times.
Cuba will seek to classify other high-level shooters, such as the gunslingers Laina Pérez, Jorge Grau and Jorge Félix Álvarez, but it will not be an easy task.
