Holguin-born poet Gilberto Gonzalez Seik officially constituted the jury of the 2024 City Award at the Salón del Hacha in the Plaza de la Revolución Calixto García Iñiguez, as part of the XXXVII edition of the Holguin Culture Week, which began this Monday, January 15, and will run thru Saturday, January 20.
The jury is made up of 35 personalities. Seik highlighted the history of the award and of the jurors who have given prestige to the event in recent years, among them: poet Pablo Armando Fernández, writer José Luis Moreno del Toro and historian María Dolores Ortiz.
Regarding the value of the awards, from their quality, Seik considered: “Sometimes it is preferable to leave a prize void. The Baibrama will be given to the one who has been able to jump. The one who has jumped the aesthetic pole that is higher and higher every year”.
Among the members of the current jury are authors such as Ruben Rodriguez, Manuel Garcia Verdecia and Ronel Gonzalez, intellectual multilaureates.
For the music category were called Maestro Gastón Allen, director of the Hermanos Avilés Orchestra; Orestes Saavedra, director of the Holguín Symphony Orchestra; and journalist and writer José Luis García, who declared: “Holguín is a luminous point in culture. There are 20 works in competition of which we left only six to select. They all have a high quality. The Week of Culture is a cultural fact and as poet Cintio Vitier expressed in his visit to the city: “culture cannot be rationed…”. And in complex economic situations it is carried out and will reach the communities of Holguin”.
In the printed press, the jury is made up of renowned journalists Lourdes Pichs, Maribel Flamand and Germán Veloz. In video, film and television director Alfonso Bandera Tamayo, and in radio, Carlos René Castro, Yudith Almeida and Yanelis Remedio Gorra.
Prestigious artists and intellectuals from all over Cuba make up the jury that will announce the City Awards on January 20 at 9:00 pm at Raúl Camayd Hall of the Eddy Suñol Theater, with free admission to the public.
