History will never forget those who could have stopped the genocide and did not do it, said Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, today condemning the United States’ veto in the United Nations Security Council of the United Nations (UN) of the resolution calling for a definitive ceasefire by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
The resolution introduced in the Council on Friday by the United Arab Emirates, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, was co-sponsored by at least 97 delegations in less than 24 hours.
The resolution demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire after UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres invoked Article 99 to avoid an even greater catastrophe after more than 17,000 civilians have died under Israeli bombs in the Strip, mostly women (more than 4,000) and children (more than 7,000).
The document obtained 13 votes in favor, the abstention of the United Kingdom and the veto of Washington.
This is the second time since October 7 that the United States has vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
The vote in the Council was preceded by a meeting of this body in which Guterres gave a detailed description of the humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip and warned that there is a high risk of a total collapse of the humanitarian aid system in Gaza, which would have devastating consequences.
Intense and continuous air, ground and sea attacks to date have hit 339 educational centers, 26 hospitals, 56 health centers, 88 mosques and three churches.
According to reports, more than 60 percent of Gaza’s homes have been destroyed or damaged.
