The University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo) was one of the first in Cuba to convene an event related to the life and work of Fidel Castro, historical leader of the Cuban Revolution.
At times of the seventh anniversary of his physical departure, the event Fidel among us took place there, where more than 70 papers were presented, authored by health science students and a dozen presentations by the teachers from this institution.
According to Raúl Torres Osorio, President of the Chair for the Study of Fidel’s Thought at the university, “this event seeks to perpetuate the legacy of the Comandante en Jefe (Commander in Chief), especially among young people, to encourage them to follow his imprint. We consider of high motivation of the students of the Medical Sciences, who in one way or another, express what Fidel represents for them and his revolutionary work.
On this occasion, the main themes of the event dealt with Fidel’s revolutionary ideology, his views on globalization and neoliberalism, his thoughts on health care, his revolutionary work, which from the work of the Revolution includes the work La Historia me Absolverá (History will absolve me), as well as his influence on the formation of values in the current times.
As a novelty, there is a theme dedicated to Fidel’s environmentalist thought, since “we know about the great dangers that exist for the destruction of the planet by the predatory work of mankind”, said the President of the grassroots section of the Union of Historians of Cuba in this Higher Education center.
Daniela Mayo, a first-year medical student, says that “our Commander in Chief was a man of great ideas, that’s why it is a duty for Cuban students to get closer to his work, because it is in this way we can only understand certain things he warned us about that are currently happening. are currently happening. My work offers a vision of the conception of Fidel’s conception of neo-liberal globalization and how this concept is concept is adapted to the present day”.
Regarding Miguel Jesús Leyva Rivas’ motivation to approach Fidel’s work, he explained that “since I was a child I always felt admiration for him. I have always felt admiration for what he had achieved, since 1953, when he was imprisoned after the assault on the Moncada Barracks, when he wrote La Historia me Absolverá, where he raised the fundamental points, mainly that of health, which is the one that concerns us the most, with the creation of the internationalist missions, hospitals and other health institutions. That is why I was motivated to investigate his thinking on the role of health in Cuba.
The Chair of Studies of the thought of Fidel Castro was founded in this educational institution in 2017, which has been growing steadily with the incorporation of students and professors and the realization of a recognized and consecrated work in the preservation of his legacy his legacy and dissemination of his work. It also has a broader research project on Fidel’s humanist vision, through different aspects of his thought.
