UN General Assembly rejects blockade of Cuba with 187 yes votes

The UN member states in its vote on the resolution that calls for the end of the blockade against Cuba for the thirty-first time ratified its overwhelming rejection with 187 yes votes.

The text, endorsed for the 31st time, received two votes against (United States and Israel) and one Member State abstained (Ukraine).

The resolution recognizes the siege as the central element of U.S. policy towards Cuba for more than six decades.

Its effects have not ceased for a single day and are known by 80 percent of the island’s population who only know one country with a blockade.

The damages caused by this policy between March 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023 amount to four thousand 867 million dollars.

This figure reflects the worsening of Cuba’s exports, mainly in the tourism sector; the ruthless persecution of the country’s banking and financial operations; the costs of geographic relocation of trade; the effects on production and services to the population; as well as the obstacles to access to advanced technologies.

In total, the economic damages based on current prices exceed 159,84.3 million dollars, and more than one trillion 337,000 taking into account the behavior of the dollar against the value of gold in the international market.

The effects of the compendium of measures exceed 405 million dollars per month, which is equivalent to one million dollars every two hours.

The General Assembly heard on Wednesday some thirty speakers, who demanded the cessation of maximum-pressure measures, which have hindered Cuba’s development for over 60 years.

This Thursday, the forum continued on with the debate, which included speeches by more than 20 speakers, including the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez.

The proposal, prepared according to General Assembly resolution 77/7 and titled: “Necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” recalls that over 80 percent of Cuba’s population was born under the effects of the policy.

The report presented by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, recognizes the continuation of the blockade against Cuba and its inclusion in the list of state sponsors of terrorism, as actions incompatible with an international system based on law.

Both US policies are a flagrant exercise of political and economic power in clear violation of human rights, including access to development.

The effects of these measures are as obvious as they are inadmissible, according to the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law, the report adds.

Also according to that information, the situation in Cuba only confirms the need to dismantle the system of sanctions, which undermines sovereign rights, the realization of human rights, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
