Holguin boxer grabs silver medal in World Cup in Germany

Jorge Manuel Soto Nápoles, from Holguín province finished with a silver medal at the 5th World Boxing Cup in Cologne, Germany, in the 80 kilogram (kg) category, where Cuba celebrated three crowns among its five finalists.

In Tuesday’s final, Soto lost 2-3 to Welsh boxer Taylor Bevan in an event attended by 120 boxers from Great Britain, France, Australia, Mongolia, Sweden, Canada, Belgium, Finland, Germany and Cuba.

The Cuban titles went to Nelson Williams (92 kg), Rolando Martínez (57 kg) and Erislandy Álvarez (63 kg), while Giovis Salfrán (51 kg) won the silver medal after losing 1-4 to the local Salah Ibrahim.

Williams, who defeated the fierce resistance of English boxer Patrick Brown in the final, celebrated twice, being crowned and awarded as the most technical athlete of the event.

Meanwhile, Martinez defeated unanimously the host Mura Yildirim, while opening the golden path for the island.

The last Cuban gold medal was won by Erislandy Alvarez (63 kg), silver medalist at the world championship in Tashkent 2023, who defeated host David Gkevorgkian 5-0.

Cuba also presented Adonis Bell (+92 kg), Karen Cantillo (54 kg), Melani de la Caridad Girado (57 kg) and Juliannet Diaz (60 kg), who lost their first bouts.

The recently concluded edition provided tickets for the European qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, to be held in the Italian city of Busto Arsizio from February 29 to March 12 of that year.
