Oropesa, who had been away from the courts for several years, faced in this round a 22-year-old girl, endorsed by her title at Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

The player from Holguín secured the bronze medal by defeating Mexico’s Haramara Gaitán, who snatched the title at the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, 2-1.

Prior to Monday’s match, Oropesa had another remarkable performance that opened the doors to the quarterfinals, by eliminating Canada’s Wen Yun Zhang, the second best ranked player of the competition.

Badminton player Oropesa said that this bronze medal will give her more motivation to face new challenges in her sports career, in which she has won titles in pairs in the Central American and Caribbean Games.

She also recalled that despite being inactive for a somewhat long period, she returned to badminton with more strength and convinced that she could still achieve important goals, and these Pan American Games are proof of that, she concluded.
