To increase the agricultural production to guarantee the people’s nourishment is one of the main objectives of the province, with this purpose Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province of Holguín, visited Magueyal Production Site in the municipality of Cacocum, accompanied by the highest authorities to check its state and to know the strategy for its recovery.
This production center, with more than 120 arable hectares and a production capacity of more than 350 thousand quintals of vegetables, is one of the main sources of food for the municipality of Cacocum, which is why it is necessary to work there.
As first action Carlos Méndez was appointed as head of the agricultural production pole, while Santiesteban recommended to make a comprehensive program, to start the rescue with the few resources and the support of the different forces of the territory because “this is the food of the municipality”, he said.
The leaders exchanged with the directors of the UEB Integral Agropecuaria Cacocum to propose a strategy to rescue more than 120 fertile hectares which are currently abandoned. They evaluated the challenges, resources, alliances, calls and labor force to initiate the recovery actions.
The Magueyal Production Pole, more than a year ago, was abandoned due to the lack of resources and the impossibility of the UEB Integral Agropecuaria Cacocum to acquire bank credits for investment in agriculture.
The first secretary was also interested in the seven reservoirs of the production area, which are abandoned, wasting an infrastructure suitable for the cultivation of fry. “It is necessary to find food for the people with the endogenous resources of the territory”, he said.
Santiesteban arrived to this place after having raised as a claim of the youth the rescue of this production farm in the Assembly XII Youth Congress, where he sentenced: “each municipality should have a production pole that guarantees the food of its people and also trades them for the capital city”.

In his tour of the area, the first secretary of the PCC in the province visited buffalo farms, belonging to the UEB Integral Agropecuaria Cacocum, dedicated to the genetic breeding of buffaloes and milk production where he verified the lack of technical control of the livestock mass in addition to the high efficiency of this breed in the production of milk and meat.
