Energy efficiency, a commitment for Cervecería Bucanero S.A.

Considered one of the entities with the highest electricity consumption in the province of Holguín, only surpassed by the nickel industry in Moa, the company Cervecería Bucanero S.A. implements actions to promote energy efficiency this year.

Nelson Aguilar Zamora, Head of the Environment and Energy Department at the company Cervecería Bucanero S.A., pointed out that in 2019 the factory reached a favorable energy consumption rate (10.96 kilowatts per hectoliter), a stage in which they produced more than one and a half million hectoliters of beer and malt, leading products of the entity.

However, the impact of the pandemic in the following years put an end to this achievement. The productions were considerably reduced, but not the indicators of electricity consumption, since the areas had to be provided with electricity to maintain other processes.

In 2022, for example, the company Cervecería Bucanero S.A. increased its energy consumption rate to 18.25 kW per hectoliter. The most worked lines were barrel and bottle, whose demand for electricity in the production process is higher than that of cans (the most efficient), the latter affected by the lack of this type of container in the markets.

Hence, one of the goals for 2023 is aimed at reducing these rates.

Aguilar Zamora stressed that a series of measures are being carried out in the short, medium and long term, in order not to exceed what was planned (14.42 kw/hl) and, in the future, continue to reduce these rates, making more efficient use of energy.

In this sense, he said, technical and control actions have been carried out based on studies and weaknesses indicated in the bank of factory problems, as well as investments.

Among these tasks, he mentioned the accommodation of loads, since they move some operations to times of less demand and leave only the necessary equipment for the process in operation.

Likewise, he pointed to the modernization of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment with the Inverter system, the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LEDs in all lighting, frequent meter readings and daily analysis of the behavior of the different variables.

The executive added that guided by the National Office for the Control of the Rational Use of Energy in the territory, Onure, they are working on a program for the development, maintenance and sustainability of renewable sources and the efficient use of energy; Therefore, they are inserted in a project with Cubasolar to carry out studies that favor the change of the energy matrix.

“We already have the characterization of the entire plant, and we have identified the most consuming areas, such as the Packaging area and the machine room, and others where opportunities for intervention to use renewable energy are appreciated,” he noted.

In this way, the water pumping systems located in the wells that supply the industry will be favored with photovoltaic panels, and areas that also allow charging the batteries of electrical means, such as forklifts.

For an entity that has a monthly electric power plan of more than 1000 megawatts, it is important to ensure energy efficiency, which is why it has an integrated management system that also involves the contribution of workers. / By Yanela Ruiz González – Ahora.
