Leuris Pupo, best placed for Cuba in Baku 2023

Leuris Pupo Requejo finished in 21st place in the first round of the 25-meter rapid fire pistol during the Baku 2023 World Shooting Championship in Azerbaijan.

The Holguin native shooter scored series of 98, 97 and 94 points to total 289, six points behind the momentary leaders of the competition, Estonian Peeter Olesk and the Indian Adarsh Singh, both with 295.

The Cuban athlete, Olympic champion in London 2012 and silver medalist in Tokyo 2020, was third among the representatives of America, as Peruvian Marko Carrillo closed ninth with 293 and the American Keith Sanderson in 20th place with the same score of 289, but with a series of 99 units.

Also, the other Cubans in the competition, Jorge Félix Álvarez and Jorge Grau, finished in 33rd and 62nd place, respectively.

Alvarez, reigning king of the Pan American and Central Caribbean Games, scored rounds of 97, 96 and 94 for a total of 287 points. Grau scored 96, 90 and 91 for a score of 277.

This Tuesday, the second round will take place to define the qualifiers for the next round.

In the team competition of this modality, Cuba is provisionally in tenth place with 853 points. India leads with 875.

Also today, the three-position rifle at 50 meters for women was disputed. In elimination group one, Lisbet Hernandez totaled 571 points and placed 63rd out of 70 competitors. She scored 190 kneeling, 197 lying down and 184 standing.

In the other segment, Dianelys Perez signed series of 187, 190 and 189 for a total of 566 and 25th place among 29 participants.

Neither of the two advanced to the medal competition. The champion of the event was China’s Qiongyue Zhang with 465.3 points in the final.

At the time Jit magazine published this article, the Asian Giant dominated the overall medal tally with eight crowns, five silver medals and three bronze medals.
