Through a project to provide family orientation to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the health system in Holguin province improves the quality of life of this vulnerable population group (autistic children).
The program includes the exchange through social networks and talks with specialists, where they are instructed in the improvement of communication skills of these infants, one of the main manifestations of this condition.
Sandra Bárbara Gurris Hidalgo, a specialist from the Provincial Public Health Directorate, emphasized that the strategy involves doctors and educators, who provide complementary tools to extend rehabilitation therapies to the home, taking into account the characteristics of each case (autistic children).
In parallel, centers such as Haydée Santamaría Cuadrado school, located in the provincial capital city, have training cycles to insert autistic children into society, in which multidisciplinary teams and the family take part.
Holguín has more than 20 thousand people with intellectual disability, with a follow-up by the health system through projects of primary and secondary attention, directed to their integral rehabilitation.
In addition, there are government programs that benefit these people, which include access to study, employment, culture, learning of practical life skills and healthy recreation, among other aspects to favor social inclusion.
