Blind and visually impaired people in Holguin target work and elections

The Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired People (ANCI for its Spanish acronym) in Holguin province started the process to elect grass-root leaders, and the the new municipal and provincial directors of this non governmental body, as well as the candidates to the National Assembly of this organization to be held next year.

During the meeting, the electoral commission that will accompany this whole process was approved and the main deficiencies faced by the organization were discussed, which should be listened to in the base and municipal assemblies by the representatives in charge of paying attention to the program for the implementation of the rights of persons with disabilities.

Latent difficulties
Nolberto Nate Noris, president of the provincial ANCI, raised as a latent problem the difficulties presented with the functioning of the commission for the implementation of the rights of persons with disabilities, the discrimination to which they are currently subjected by not complying with the norms implemented for their welfare and social development”.

There is an administrative and political ignorance of the subject. The State adopted agreement 9040 of the Council of Ministers to watch over the rights of people with disabilities from the nation, the province and the municipality and this has difficulties to the point of not being fulfilled”, clarified the president of Holguín ANCI.

Improving the quality of life of disabled people and finding a solution to the problems mentioned were the focus of the Extraordinary Assembly where each delegate and the directors gave their opinion on the subject.

The province has 3,307 ANCI members, of which several are linked to sports, such as Sheila Roche, a member of the national judo team, and Ulises Aguilera Cruz, Pan-American champion. In the cultural field Ana Herminia Rodríguez, member of the National Association of Decimists, with several books published and leader of the cultural project “La ceiba en flor”, among other outstanding members.
