Ana Laura and Leuris, best athletes of Holguin in 2023

Ana Laura Jimenez, in rowing, and Leuris Pupo Requejo, in shooting, were selected as the most outstanding athletes, of either sex, in individual sports in the province of Holguin during 2023.

The most outstanding female athlete in collective sports turned out to be Betsy Yelena Claro, in basketball, while among the men, the distinction went to baseball player Yordan Manduley Escalona.

The rookie of the year was Lauren Ducas Rodríguez, in artistic gymnastics, and the most outstanding athlete with a contract abroad was Yasnier Matos Rodríguez, in soccer.

The sporting event of the year was the performance of Leuris Pupo Requejo, who qualified for the seventh time for the Olympic Games (Paris 2024) by winning his third Pan American Games crown, together with a bronze and fourth place in the Central American Games and a fourth place in the World Cup.

According to the traditional annual survey where members of the sports press and representatives of sports at the municipal and provincial levels take part, the 10 best athletes of the year 2023 in the province of Holguin are the following:

Andrey Barnet Laguna (rowing), Taimara Oropesa Pupo (badminton), Marlyn Pérez Escalona (taekwondo), Yordan Danilo Ferrer Estevens (fencing), Jorge Manuel Soto Nápoles (boxing), Alejandro Parra Pérez (cycling), Juan Columbié Sanamé (weightlifting), Dennier Infante Pupo (sailing), Eddy Antonio Vázquez Figueredo (shooting), Eleyennis Estupiñán Consuegra (baseball).

As usual, other sports categories were also awarded, where Reynerio Castellano Zamora was chosen as the best phys ed teacher; Wilfredo Vicet Ramírez, manager of the Panteras of soccer was recognized as the best sports coach, and Freddy Bernal Hernández deserved the condition of most outstanding sports volunteer activist.

Among those who dictate justice in sports, Ernesto Enrique Hernández Toledo (water polo), as best international referee, and Andrés Ramón Cruz Caballero (weightlifting), best national referee, stood out.

The most outstanding parathletes from Holguín during the year are Sheyla Hernández Estupiñán, in judo, and Ulicer Aguilera Cruz, in javelin throwing.
