A project aimed at reducing possible effects from natural events and man’s activity in the municipalities to the East of the province of Holguín, is developed by the University of Moa, which is included in the studies of dangers, vulnerabilities and risks in the territory.
Beatriz Riverón Zaldívar, professor of Hydrogeology there, explained that this program leads to evaluate variables like landslides, forest fires, floods, droughts, earthquakes, among others events.
She said that now the first stage of the program is being implemented, where priority is given to the creation of people’s protection plans, focused on reducing human and material losses.

Riverón Zaldívar explained the strategies undertaken in Moa, Sagua de Tánamo, Mayarí and Frank País allow raise awareness on risks around vulnerable areas before events like droughts and high intensity hurricanes, very frequent in the Caribbean basin.
As part of the studies of dangers, vulnerabilities and risks in the province, they also investigate other themes, like animal diseases with the participation of the territorial branch of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma for its Spanish acronym).
In addition, national and international projects national and international projects to promote sustainable agriculture in these territories and the self-sufficiency of vulnerable communities, which is one of Cuba’s governmental priorities.
