Holguin Craftspeople target shortcomings in commercialization

Members of the Cuban Association of Craftspeople and Artists of Holguin (ACAA) analyzed the main results of the organization in the five-year period from 2019 to 2023 where they discussed the main shortcomings in the commercialization of their works and the main objectives to strengthen the institution.

The meeting seeks to strengthen the internal life of the organization and a greater involvement of the movement of craftspeople and artists in the activities and exhibition fairs developed by the province, as well as in the “Artists for Life Movement”, organizational deficiencies caused by lack of motivation.

The non-compliance with Decree Law 106 that stipulates the functioning of the ACAA, focused the debate, the obstacles in the commercialization of the craftworkers’ works within the tourist spaces, where the Self-Employed Workers are more favored in the commercial processes than the members of the organization.

The lack of a provincial headquarters, working conditions and spaces for marketing were some of the complaints of the members, who expressed their concern about the quality of the art being commercialized when priority is given to the sefl-employed workers who have neither studied nor passed the filters of art critics.

“Allowing anyone to commercialize works of art only with a patent, without having studied, nor belonging to the registry of the creator or to the Uneac means destroying the filters of art criticism” …. Not everything that is commercialized is art” …

Yordanka Rosabal, member of the ACAA in Holguin, expressed the need for the analysis of these deficiencies from national authorities in order to create an optimal environment for the strengthening of the role of craftspeople according to the working objectives of the organization.

The ACAA in Holguin with 323 members, distributed in 12 municipalities of the province, seeks for the next five years to strengthen the presence of the associates in the cultural activities of the territory, as well as in the “Artists for Life Movement” and the academic improvement of the community of craftspeople and artists.
