The Gibara International Film Festival, to be held in this city in the Cuban province of Holguin, is getting ready today to welcome a diversity of productions in a race for the coveted Lucia Award.
According to a press conference, in the 17th edition of the event, which will be held from August 1 to 5, gender issues will have a special presence that transcends the filmography, as they will be addressed in the theoretical event, exhibitions, plays and other activities.
As usual, fiction and documentary films will be screened, both feature and short ones, which will be awarded at the closing gala.
Among these proposals are the special presentations of Silvio Rodriguez; My First Task, by Catherine Murphy; Last Dance, by Delphine Lehericey and Princess, by Roberto de Paolis, from the United States, Switzerland and Italy, respectively.
The Fiction Feature Films section includes the Cuban works El mundo de Nelsito, by Fernando Pérez; Bajo un sol poderoso, by Kiki Álvarez and La espera, by Daniel Ross.
Meanwhile, international productions include Huesera, from Mexico; Foudre, from Switzerland; Haut et fort, co-produced by Morocco and France; Petite Nature, from France; 20 000 species of bees and Isósceles, from Spain; Zátopek, from the Czech Republic and Welcome Venice, from Italy.
In the Fiction Short Film category, the following national titles stand out: Gemini, by Orlando Mora; Blanck, by Daniel Santoyo; El aniversario, by Patricia Ramos, and Patadas, by Pablo Massip.
Other films include Viaja con Miranda, from Canada; La chismosa, from Mexico; El viaje, Paris 70 and La niña del almendro, from Spain; Recoba, from the United States; Abecé, from Brazil; Vienen las grietas, from Colombia; Las nubes que pasan, from China and Un pasaje sin regreso, from the Dominican Republic.
The film event includes other sections such as Documentary Feature Films, Documentary Short Films and Animation, with wide representation from Cuba and other nations.
Three Official Juries (fiction, documentaries and animation, and film press) and two Collateral Juries (film clubs and young people) will be in session at the same time.
Among the actions dedicated to exalt the seventh art, the awarding of the Honorary Lucia Award to artist Luis Alberto Garcia and the legendary Cuban film costume designer Violeta Cooper will stand out at the opening gala.
At the closing ceremony, the award was reserved for Cuban actor, producer and director Jorge Perugorría, who will head the event from 2016 to 2022.
