The 7th World Media Summit took place on November 7th at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. To discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the transformation of media. As well as the need for a cooperative, broad, and secure approach to this technological development.
The event was convened by the Chinese news agency Xinhua. Which is celebrating its 95th anniversary today. With major international news agencies serving as co-organizers.
More than 500 representatives from approximately 330 leading media organizations. Think tanks, political parties, government bodies, the UN, and other international institutions are participating in the event. Which has previously been held in China, Russia, and Qatar.
During the opening ceremony, Yin Li—a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Party’s top official in Beijing. He welcomed the participants to the Chinese capital, a city of 21 million inhabitants that is home to prominent media outlets. Also 92 universities, thousands of research institutes, and tens of thousands of innovative companies.
Li Shulei, also a member of the CPC Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Party’s Publicity Department congratulated Xinhua on its 95th anniversary. He outlined the vision of the Chinese Party and government regarding the pursuit of a secure, broad, and accessible development of artificial intelligence.
Li noted that AI is a useful tool for generating, transcribing, translating, or verifying content. As well as for optimizing processes and replacing humans in repetitive tasks. However, he cautioned that care must be taken to avoid a path that leads to the impoverishment and homogenization of content. A high-ranking Chinese Communist Party official urged media organizations present to share technological resources, data, and information. And to train AI models using a broader range of data, in order to prevent a monopoly on content.
He called for efforts to ensure that AI is developed for the benefit of all peoples and humanity as a whole. Rather than serving merely as a “game for powerful nations and powerful individuals.”
Other speakers at the event included Fu Hua, president of Xinhua. As well as the heads of the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Agence France-Presse (AFP), Kyodo News, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), and other prominent news agencies.
The event also featured contributions from government ministers, media executives from various countries, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, and the General Director of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Also the latter highlighted the positive role AI can play in reaching new audiences and breaking down language barriers. While warning of the risks it poses to cultural and linguistic diversity. She announced that the UN in Geneva has established a group of experts to analyze the impact of AI on human rights.
Representing Latin America, Daniel Ortega Murillo—an advisor on communication and social movements to the Nicaraguan presidency. And Patricia Villegas Marín, president of Telesur, were invited to speak.
Villegas Marín underscored the critical challenges the Global South faces in accessing AI developments. As well as the restrictions imposed on nations such as Cuba which remains subject to a brutal blockade, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and others.
She advocated for the development of AI in a manner that ensures information sovereignty and technological sovereignty.
The Beijing Summit adopted a declaration advocating for the open, broad, and secure use of AI by all media outlets to foster progress, peace, and development. It also called for cooperation among media organizations to address the communication challenges of the current era.
It also established the initial committee for the Global Media Initiative for the Joint Development of AI Application Standards. Composed of 11 Chinese media outlets and universities, and 11 media outlets from the rest of the world.
