The *¡Actúa Diferente!* (Act Differently!) project, sponsored by the World Food Programme (WFP), creates local development opportunities. Within the agricultural sector by strengthening sustainable food systems in the municipality of Rafael Freyre.
The initiative provides producers with tools—through workshops, meetings, and professional development programs. To establish alternative cultivation methods that combine tradition and science. This was highlighted to the CNA by Luis Enrique Velázquez Sánchez, a member of the Municipal Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and the official responsible for the agri-food sector in the area.
Furthermore the official also underscored the WFP’s importance in assisting vulnerable populations and responding to emergencies. Such as recovery efforts following cyclones. This support now extends to the “May 17th” and “Carlos Noris” cooperatives. As well as to collaboration with public health and education institutions.
Elizabeth Velázquez, the municipality’s Director of Local Development, stated that the plan supports the municipal strategy. Specifically the goal of consolidating a sustainable and resilient food supply chain by building capacity and training personnel.
Through resources, funding, and scientific guidance, the program strengthens these systems and their associated social safety nets. The aim is to ensure a varied food supply and adequate nutrition for beneficiaries. With actions tailored to the territory’s specific socioeconomic and climatic conditions, such as aridity and its coastal location.
Act Differently! serves as a valuable tool for guiding and monitoring production models. Ensuring that progress benefits vulnerable community groups. Including children, pregnant women, and the elderly the official noted.
It is also being implemented in Niceto Pérez (Guantanamo), Guama (Santiago de Cuba), and Jiguani (Granma). In the municipalities of Urbano Noris (Holguin) and Manati (Las Tunas). The Act Differently! initiative benefited 52 entities, over 16 supply systems, and thousands of people during its initial phase.
