The Holguin Construction Materials Company (Medano) is implementing projects to achieve energy autonomy. At its facilities using photovoltaic technology and to reduce its reliance on the National Electric System (SEN).
Yunior Pupo Leyva, the company’s general director, informed the CNA that the firm has an installed solar panel capacity of 22 kilowatts (kW). Distributed across the administrative areas of the headquarters and its Basic Business Units (UEBs), which supports technical and economic operations.
Yurima Hernández Paneque, Director of Energy and Oversight, explained that the headquarters is moving toward electrical self-sufficiency. With a system comprising over 16 kW of solar panels, an inverter, and a 20 kW battery bank. Ensuring operational continuity during power outages.
The Maintenance and Logistics, Holguin, and soon Gibara UEBs have also been assigned this alternative, albeit with lower generation capacity. Meanwhile, the Sagua de Tanamo unit relies on a portable generator due to its distance from the main production center.
Pupo Leyva noted that a study regarding an energy mix transition is underway for the industrial area. Given the high power demands of production technologies. Although feasibility analyses have ruled out photovoltaic energy as a viable option.
The expert explained that this is due to dust particles emitted by aggregate mills during production, which interfere with the panels’ energy capture. Consequently, other renewable sources, such as wind power, are being evaluated. The executive noted that the entity expects to end the year with approximately 40 kW of installed capacity. Which will allow it to feed energy into the National Electric System (SEN) on weekends and contribute to strengthening the grid at the local level.
Medano stands out for its use of science, technological development, and research. Aimed at optimizing manufacturing processes in the sector, earning it multiple “National Vanguard” awards.
