Russia to Resume Air Links with Havana

Resuming direct flights between Russia and Cuba remains on the agenda. Alexander Shchetinin, Director of the Latin American Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told the Sputnik news agency on Monday.

“First and foremost, this depends on the serious situation currently observed in Cuba. The issue of resuming connections is on the agenda. But it is undoubtedly a matter that requires ensuring a whole series of necessary conditions. Which, we hope, will be resolved as the situation evolves,” the diplomat explained.

On January 29th, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order allowing for the imposition of tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba. Also he declared a state of emergency citing an alleged security threat originating from the island.

The measure has further exacerbated fuel shortages in Cuba, affecting transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.

According to data from the Caribbean nation’s National Office of Statistics and Information, Cuba received just 298,057 international visitors between January and the end of March. A 48 percent decrease compared to the same period the previous year.

A lack of fuel to supply aircraft led to the suspension of direct flights from countries such as Canada and Russia. Two of the main source markets for tourists visiting the archipelago.
