“I have a formula that I know won’t fail: a little bit of everyone and a touch of the beyond.” These lyrics by Isaac Delgado provided the perfect inspiration for finding a key element of the new interactive project taking shape at CMKO Radio Angulo back in the year 2000.
It all began when producers Víctor Osorio Zaldívar and León Batista Suárez designed a show for that summer’s programming. Lineup titled “¡Qué domingo!” (What a Sunday!). León admits that this show served as the laboratory for “La Fórmula.” As they tested many of the segments that would later become part of the interactive program. Such as “La guía práctica” (Practical Guide), “Viceversa,” “Top Ten,” and various contests, among others.
They continued this way for a year, broadcasting every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Eventually. They decided to launch “The Formula,” a move that was far from simple. Also the new show was replacing “Dígame y algo más” (Tell Me and Something More). A program with high ratings that was very popular, hosted by Enma García and Osvaldo Aguilera.
León recalls that the transition didn’t happen overnight. Since “Tell Me and Something More” aired Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.. They first reduced its runtime to one hour. In the 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. slot, they introduced the music program “Oye como va” (Listen to How It Goes). Segments of which were also later incorporated into “The Formula.”
In the beginning, the show started at 2:30 p.m.. Eventually settling into the time slot for which many of us know it today: 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Moreover the founding team included the voices of Enma García and Osvaldo Aguilera alongside León (who also served as scriptwriter and director). It was a three-host program, and their voices blended together remarkably well. Joining the founders of *The Formula* (CMKO) was advisor Milagros Susana Fuentes. She notes that they worked a week in advance, which made the workflow more organized. “A truly participatory program with significant content, where listeners could interact. It really broke audience records.”
A defining feature of the show was the charisma of its hosts. An outpouring of joy and humor that allowed listeners to identify with the program and increasingly join in on its various segments. And to clear up a common question: the show’s jokes and banter weren’t scripted. Everything was spontaneous and live.
In 2006, Gilberto García Acosta joined the team as a scriptwriter, host, and director alongside Léon. Gilberto remembers this period as “an exciting experience of personal growth. As he had the opportunity to share the microphone with Enma García and Osvaldo Aguilera. Furthermore as well as Néstor Salazar and Idalmis Castellanos, among others.” He remained with the show for 15 years. A period during which the program won the Popularity Award (2020) and Gilberto earned the title of most popular host.
*The Formula* is a big family—not only because of its loyal listeners. But also because of the creators who have passed through the show and left their mark on it: Flor Vega (advisor), Eduardo Vega (sound, script, and direction). Amalio Carralero (script), Hendrick Knight (assistant director), Osvaldo Pérez (host), and Yinet Cruz Cabrera (host).
Also the team currently producing the program includes: Leonardo Raúl Rodríguez (host and director), Idalmis Castellanos (host), Eduardo Vega (script), Robiel Antonio Riverón Ávila (sound engineer), Noire Aguilera (sports segment), and Sergio Emilio Hernández (assistant director).
