Ian, Dylan, and Liam, triplets from Holguin, were discharged from the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital after receiving specialized care. They were born on June 16th.
The medical discharge of these little ones is a joyous moment for their young mother, Yenia Lago Santiesteban. And her four other children who are eagerly awaiting their arrival in the community of Maceo. In the municipality of Cacocum, to finally meet their siblings. It is also a joyous occasion for the hospital staff who assisted them throughout their pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period.
During their nearly two-month hospital stay, the mother and newborns received the necessary care. From those who accompanied them every step of the way: doctors, physiatrists, psychologists, nurses, staff at the retinopathy clinic. And compassionate hands like those of Rocío, the cafeteria worker at the Lenin Hospital. Also who took charge of every breakfast and lunch from the moment the babies were born. As part of the special diet the mother required.
Regarding the babies’ progress, Dr. Ana Nastia Tamayo Ortiz, head of the Neonatology Service. She recently commented that “the first and third babies required non-invasive ventilation for 24 hours. All three had started colostrum therapy and were breastfed by their mothers three days after birth. At six days old, they were transferred to the skin-to-skin room. They maintained satisfactory progress, as monitored by the Retinopathy, Physiatry, and Psychology clinics,” she concluded.
Each day allowed for close monitoring of their development and well-being until they were ready to return home to their families.
The send-off was marked by emotion from those who participated in the babies’ care since their arrival into the world. As the last birth of triplets before theirs occurred in April 2024.
Furthermore this explains why, for the staff of Cuba’s largest maternity ward, located in the province’s flagship hospital. Liam, Dylan, and Ian leave a lasting impression and become part of the life stories that underpin the institution’s history.
Now a new stage in their lives begins, in the place that will be their home. They move from neonatal care to follow-up care through Primary Health Care. However, those who witnessed their story firsthand will long remember the miracle of triplet life.
