Holguin Protects Vital Infrastructure After National Electric System Outage

The Holguin Electric Company has prepared its 220 kV substation with diesel generators. It is guaranteeing service to hospitals and vital infrastructure in the provincial capital following today’s National Electric System (SEN) outage.

Rubert Reynaldo González, the company’s general director, explained to CNA that established protocols have been activated to create a backup power system. To protect hospitals and other strategic social and economic facilities.

The director specified that the Pediatric, Military, and Clinical-Surgical Hospitals are currently receiving power through microsystems via circuit 12. Meanwhile, the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital, the company itself, and Etecsa (the telecommunications company) through the 20th Street project are also providing power.

According to the update provided by the entity, microsystems are already operational throughout the country. With the aim of protecting essential services for the population during the energy crisis.

As reported by Lázaro Guerra, Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines. In statements to the Cuban Television Evening News, five Energas generators are currently supplying electricity to a portion of Havana and a small area of Mayabeque province.

He added that the system has now reached Mariel, where the startup process for unit five of the thermoelectric power plant has begun. While Santa Cruz del Norte has also been energized to bring unit two of that plant online.

Also he noted that difficulties persist in the central region of the country in restoring power to the Energas Varadero plant. Subsequently starting up the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermoelectric plant. Due to weather conditions that have slowed the progress of the work.

The official explained that the current restoration efforts are more complex than in previous instances. Due to a lack of fuel for distributed generation, which limits the creation of small electrical substations in other provinces.

Despite these difficulties, he assured that the authorities will continue working to gradually increase generation capacity. And expand electricity service coverage throughout the country.
