Annual Health Award Showcases Outstanding Research from Holguin

The Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital hosted the 49th Annual Health Award (PAS) Competition 2026. Dedicated to presenting advances in scientific research in the health sector in the province. Eighty-nine scientific and technological projects were submitted to this competition. Considered the most important event in the health field annually.

The President of the Provincial Council of Scientific Health Societies, Dr. Elianis Ocaña Samada. Shared her perspective on the event’s characteristics: “We are very pleased with the participation. As this year there was greater representation of competing projects. In addition to having professionals from eight municipalities in the province, which is a strength. The projects were diverse across various categories. Such as books, applied research, scientific articles, master’s theses, specialty theses, technological innovations—in short, a wide variety of work types.”

The nurse, who is also a professional, highlighted the participation of student scientific works and medical education projects as a positive aspect. Research projects from Primary Health Care stood out. Thanks to the master’s program in this area, which included a significant number of theses presented at the event.

Also the works presented included 33 scientific articles, 12 master’s theses, 12 specialty theses, and 10 doctoral dissertations. With authors representing 28 provincial chapters of scientific societies. These works covered health areas ranging from Family Medicine, Dentistry, and Pediatric Surgery to Oncology and Geriatrics.

At the conclusion of the event, several awards were presented to entities, centers, and institutions. Among them, the César Fornet Fruto Polyclinic in the municipality of Banes was recognized for its outstanding representation. As was the Lucía Iñiguez Landin Clinical Surgical Hospital. Which contributed the most awards and mentions in this edition of the competition. The Tamara Búnker Medical Sciences Branch in Moa was also recognized. The Family Medicine category was the most prominent.

The competition awarded 24 research projects. Including the Best Student Work in Medical Sciences, authored by Marlon Leyva Guillén. In the book category, the young Doctor of Science José Cabrales Fuentes received an award for his work, “Transpalpebral Ocular Doppler Ultrasound.” Regarding this, the specialist in Imaging and Comprehensive General Medicine. Accredited in 2025 as a Radiologist of Excellence in Ibero-American Radiology. Pointed out that this book is a proposal that redefines the approach to pregnant women with preeclampsia in the maternal and child health program, not only in Cuba but internationally. This research is presented in a single copy and its first volume.

The Scientific Merit Award was presented to Dr. Mildred Gutiérrez Segura. A specialist in prosthodontics, who expressed: “First of all, I am surprised because it is a great award and recognition of many years of work in the field of science. I am thrilled, and it is wonderful to receive it because it is not the end of a professional stage but rather it generates new commitments. Also new goals, new purposes, especially in the training of new generations,” she affirmed.

Also the senior researcher, with 33 years of professional experience, commented that her initial research. Focused on the specific field of dental prosthetics, but after completing her master’s and doctoral degrees. She has specialized in research in the field of medical education. In recent years, she has participated in every edition of the PAS (Scientific and Psychological Association) and has won a national award and an honorable mention for her book, “Clinical Dental Prosthetics.” And for a study related to the integration of educational software in the teaching and learning process, respectively.

In the scientific articles category, one of the award winners was Dr. Indira Velázquez López. A First-Degree Specialist in Pediatric Surgery and author of “Technological Update for Postoperative Follow-Up of Esophageal Atresia.” She noted that the main contribution of her research lies in improving the quality of life of newborns who have undergone surgery for esophageal atresia. Also who survive thanks to technological advances in recent decades.

These advances have also led to an increase in postoperative complications, as the number of survivors has risen. These complications have increased. And some even persist into adulthood, impacting the quality of life of children, adolescents, and adults.

Around thirty organizations participated in the Annual Health Award. Showcasing a wide range of research areas, from maternal and child health to patient safety and quality of care. Despite the well-known limitations facing the healthcare sector. Holding the Annual Health Award Competition is a commendable achievement, providing a vital space for knowledge exchange and professional development.
