The province of Holguin is strengthening agricultural development through research projects. Aimed at contributing, from a scientific perspective, to addressing climate change, one of the territory’s priorities.
Zulema Reyes Bermúdez, technical director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that these programs contribute to a thematic line. Focused on cultivating species resistant to saltwater intrusion and intense drought. Among the most notable effects of this phenomenon.
Furthermore the official specified that priority is given to root crops, vegetables, and grains. Employing agroecological techniques aimed at improving soil quality.
Reyes Bermúdez highlighted among the most outstanding projects initiated in 2026 the one titled “Tools for Climate Change Mitigation in the Municipality of Gibara.” Which comprises a pilot project in that town aimed at developing a technological package based on up-to-date climatological information.
She added that this initiative is complemented by “Management of a Sustainable System to Mitigate the Effects of Drought on Sugarcane. Through the Planting of Drought-Resistant Species According to the Conditions of Each Region.” And “Adaptation of Robusta Coffee in the Plains of Holguin Province.”
Moreover these projects will strengthen food sovereignty in rural and hard-to-reach areas. As well as establish planting and harvesting cycles based on the latest weather information.
The Holguin Territorial Meteorological Center provides scientific and technical services to farmers and production units. With the aim of improving crop yields based on updated studies.
