As part of the 4th Annual Day of Affection celebrations. The city of Holguin became the epicenter of historical analysis and heartfelt tribute. Under the banner “Martí in Holguin.” Yesterday afternoon was not just a date on the calendar. Also a space for profound dialogue about one of the most iconic figures of the Revolution: Celia Sánchez Manduley.
The panel, titled “Celia Sánchez Manduley: Between Historiographical Debate and Gender Stereotypes.” Served as a platform to commemorate the 106th anniversary of her birth.
Moreover the event not only paid tribute to her memory but also delved into lesser-known aspects of her life and work.
Dr. C. Paul Sarmiento, director of the Center for Cultural and Identity Studies at the University of Holguin. He emphasized that the event was a rigorous academic exercise that deeply moved the attendees.
The discussion featured prominent intellectuals who contributed diverse perspectives on the “most native flower.”
Professor Víctor Aguilera Nonell and researcher Leidiedis Góngora Cruz underscored Celia Cruz’s crucial role. In safeguarding the historical memory of the Cuban Revolution.
Góngora Cruz, for her part, addressed how social imaginaries have constructed Celia Cruz’s image. Analyzing the tension between her historical reality and gender stereotypes.
Paul Sarmiento analyzed the formative process of her thought between 1920 and 1955.
Her connection to areas such as Manzanillo, Media Luna, Pilón, and Niquero was emphasized. Also where her Martí-inspired ethics and social empathy left an indelible mark.
“Yesterday, we did scientific research, but it was also moving to remember an illustrious woman on her birthday,” stated Sarmiento. Who also presides over the Social Sciences Council in the province.
The event was made possible through the efforts of the José Martí Cultural Society and the Martí Youth Movement of Holguin. The speakers agreed that figures like Celia Sánchez demand greater attention. And dissemination from contemporary historiography to recover their true political and human significance.
Once again, the event reaffirms that Celia’s thought. Deeply linked to the values of José Martí, continues to be a necessary reference point for contemporary Cuban society.
