In the coastal landscape of Boca de Tanamo, the sun has always been a faithful companion. Until recently, its energy faded with the sunset. Today, the story is different. This community in Holguin province has gone from being an isolated spot to a benchmark of energy sovereignty. Thanks to the installation of Photovoltaic Solar Systems (PVSS) that have transformed the daily lives of its inhabitants.
The initiative is part of the national program implemented by the National Electric Union (UNE) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Aimed at electrifying isolated homes through the installation of five thousand 2 kW systems throughout Cuba.
What distinguishes the success in Boca de Tanamo is not only the technology, but also the humanism that drove it. The first step stemmed from academic rigor: the Social Observatory of the University of Holguin (UHo) conducted an in-depth sociodemographic study. That identified the real needs of the 73 residents of the area.
However, on this occasion, the researchers didn’t limit themselves to taking notes. In a gesture of committed science, the academics immersed themselves in the neighborhood. It wasn’t unusual to see sociologists carrying scaffolding. Installing panels alongside technicians, or sharing a meal and laughter with the residents.
The project’s success is the result of a strategic alliance between various stakeholders from the Frank País municipal government. Specialists from the Holguin Electric Company, technicians from the ACINOX Steel Research Center, and researchers from the University of Holguin.
Thanks to this collaborative effort, 26 solar panel modules were installed. Ensuring that each family has the necessary energy for lighting and basic appliances. Drastically improving the quality of life in the settlement.
Behind the numbers and the cables are the protagonists of this everyday epic. Names like Arnolis, Yunier, Onel, Rafael, Ernesto, Jorge, and Albert are echoed in the community’s expressions of gratitude. They are ordinary men and women. With the support of government investment and scientific knowledge, have made Boca de Tanamo shine brightly. Demonstrating that when science and heart unite, no dark corner can withstand the test of time.
