Cuban baseball is in mourning after the death of former player and manager of the Ciego de Ávila Tigers, Danny Miranda. It was confirmed this Sunday. He succumbed to an acute intestinal obstruction.
Miranda, a native of Morón, underwent surgery after experiencing an intestinal complication, but he did not recover. According to sources close to the Ciego de Ávila sports community.
A respected figure both on and off the field, Miranda was part of the golden generation of Cuban baseball that achieved Olympic glory in Athens. Leaving a legacy of dedication and discipline that transcended his time as an athlete.
His statistics include 514 runs scored, 542 RBIs, 1,009 hits, 144 doubles, 88 home runs, and 36 triples. He drew 429 walks, struck out 424 times, and posted a .290 batting average.
Defensively, he played in 6,841.2 innings across 970 games, committing 45 errors for a .994 fielding percentage.
His resume also includes titles as a player in the 1994 U-15 World Cup in Mazatlán and the 1996 Youth World Cup in Cuba. As well as the 2002 World University Games in Italy.
Miranda debuted as manager of the Tigres in the 63rd National Series. Also when they secured a spot in the III Elite League. A tournament in which he led his team to the championship.
Internationally, he managed the U-23 national team that won the bronze medal at the 2005 Pan American Games in Panama and qualified for the next World Cup.
