Company Brings Storytelling to Neighborhoods in Holguin

The main commitment of the Words to the Wind Company is to bring storytelling to communities in the province of Holguin. Amidst these difficult times, a space of joy for children, teenagers, and families in this eastern region.

Yoyi Sera, an artist and director of the group, explained to CNA that the group coordinated performances in schools in the provincial capital, art student groups, and hard-to-reach neighborhoods. As well as at Palabras al Viento’s own headquarters, where they focused primarily on children through recreational games and activities.

“In the current circumstances, we believe that carrying out cultural activities is very important for children. Also who are always eager for fun and leisure time. Therefore, it is our duty to share joy and help them cope with the stress and anxieties of the moment,” he argued.

Among these spaces, the group sponsors “Contraportada” (Back Cover) and “La hora del cuento” (Story Time) at the Alex Urquiola Provincial Library, where they employ dance, song, set design, and improvisation in the staging of theatrical works. A highlight is “Contar la historia” (Telling the Story), developed at the Calixto García Birthplace Museum. Which fosters dialogue with students about local history.

He further explained that, as creators, they conceive of the concept of community in a broad sense. Since their visits to schools reach teachers, educators, and staff at each center. As well as groups of students and an adult audience whom they value during the performance of their pieces.

Furthermore, the group starred in the city’s most recent premiere with the presentation of “When a Child Leaves,” written by Fermín López and performed by Granma student Andrea Suárez López as part of her graduation project. The play addressed themes relevant to Cuban families, including motherhood and loss.

The Palabras al Viento (Words to the Wind) Storytelling Company, founded in April 2004. It has captivated audiences throughout Cuba and the world with works that combine diverse art forms. Their work has been recognized with the City Awards, the Contarte Awards, and the Honorary Minstrel Award bestowed by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba.
