Agriculture in Cuba, a fundamental pillar of the economy and food sovereignty. It is currently facing a profound crisis that threatens not only domestic supply but also the nation’s sustainable development.
For decades, this sector has experienced a significant decline due to multiple factors. Including a lack of investment, aging infrastructure, limitations in inputs and technology, and difficulties accessing competitive markets. These challenges are exacerbated by the current context of economic crisis and international restrictions. Leaving agricultural production far below the country’s needs.
One issue that particularly concerns the population is the high price of agricultural products in the market. Producers are often blamed, but this perception is far from the truth.
Cuban farmers face very high costs for inputs, transportation, fertilizers, and labor. Moreover, their work demands constant effort under often adverse conditions. Therefore, prices reflect not an attempt at excessive profit, but the real burden of producing amidst the crisis. It is unfair to blame those who work the land when the true causes lie in the complex economic system that plagues the country.
In the province of Holguin, a territory with natural conditions conducive to agriculture, this situation is no different. Despite the agronomic potential and the commitment of small and medium-sized farmers. So the region faces similar challenges: lack of resources, deteriorating infrastructure, and limitations in product distribution. However, Holguin also represents a beacon of hope for agricultural recovery in Cuba. Thanks to diversified and collaborative production initiatives that seek to revitalize the countryside and guarantee fresh food for its population.
Ultimately, rescuing Cuban agriculture is not only an economic issue, but a social and strategic necessity. It is time to recognize the value of the agricultural sector and act decisively so that it once again becomes an engine of well-being and sovereignty. Only in this way can we successfully face current challenges and guarantee a more prosperous future for Cuba and for Holguin in particular.
