Gabriel Rufián deplores the US blockade against Cuba

The spokesperson for the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) party in the Congress of Deputies, Gabriel Rufián, expressed his admiration for Cuba this Thursday. While also deploring the United States blockade.

Rufián outlined the current situation on the Caribbean island. “Where not a drop of oil has entered since January 9th” and where the US has reinforced its embargo to prevent fuel from reaching the island.

“There has been a brutal blockade in Cuba for 66 years by the United States, but of course, communism is very bad and what if it works. So it has to be blocked,” Rufián commented with his characteristic sharp language in the Lower House.

The legislator, a rising figure on the Spanish left, posed a question to which he then answered himself:

“Why target Cuba, if Cuba doesn’t have a drop of oil? Because Cuba is a symbol.”

“At the height of the pandemic, when people were dying outside hospitals around the world. Including in the United States because they couldn’t afford it. Cuba publicly produced four vaccines and sent doctors free of charge to half the world, including the United States.”

“So, ladies and gentlemen, long live Cuba!”

Yesterday, in the same chamber, the Spanish government reiterated that it will always stand with the Cuban people and emphasized its rejection of the US blockade.

Responding to concerns raised by EH Bildu party deputy Jon Iñarritu during the question period in the Congress of Deputies. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed that only the Cuban people, “and only they freely, will decide the future of Cuba.”

The Spanish Foreign Minister attributed the “unacceptable situation” currently facing Cuba to an attempt to “impose the law of the strongest.” Adding that Spain will continue to provide assistance.
