The Haydée Santamaría Special School, the only one of its kind in the province of Holguin. It is dedicated to improving the quality of life of autistic children. Through work in the areas of socialization, communication, and behavior.
Mairet Guerrero Ricardo, the school’s director, told CNA that the center serves as a transitional space to address the necessary skills. To continue education according to each child’s developmental stage.
She indicated that most of the students are nonverbal. So alternatives such as equine therapy and visual aids are used to facilitate learning and interpersonal relationships.

The director highlighted that after a monitoring period by the center’s multidisciplinary team. Combined instruction begins, with the children attending general education or intellectual disability schools for three days and the Haydée Santamaría school for three days.
The attention is individualized with the necessary curricular adaptations according to the level of functioning. Which allows for work on motor skills and progress in compensating for the abilities affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Magalys Grau González, a teacher at the school, emphasized the importance of this compensatory program for improving the children’s well-being. Facilitating their adaptation to social interaction and the transition to other educational levels.
ASD is a condition diagnosed in the first years of life that causes difficulties in language, motor skills, learning, and interpersonal relationships.
